The San Francisco, San Pablo, and Suisun estuaries in Northern California are the focal points of the San Francisco Bay Area, also referred to as the Bay Area.

In 1542
Due to the fog at San Francisco, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo’s expedition in 1542 did not see the estuaries or the Golden Gate while exploring the Pacific coast near the Bay Area. The Santa Cruz Mountains divide the Bay Area’s estuaries from Monterey Bay, where the Ohlone people would have encountered this expedition while exploring the latter.
In 1579
In June 1579, Sir Francis Drake landed at Drakes Bay, close to Point Reyes, and became the first European to claim the region. He called the area Nova Albion, or New Albion, for Queen Elizabeth I, but the English did not immediately investigate his claim.
In 1595
Sebastião Rodrigues Soromenho was entrusted with surveying the west coast of the Americas in 1595 by Philip II of Spain. On July 5, 1595, Soromenho set out on the Manila Galleon San Agustin, and they arrived in land in early November on the Lost Coast, north of the Bay Area, between Point St. George and Trinidad Head. Following the coast south, the expedition arrived in Drakes Bay on November 7th, when the San Agustin claimed the area as Puerto y Bahía de San Francisco.
After World War II
In September 1951, the Treaty of San Francisco was signed in San Francisco to reestablish peaceful relations between Japan and the Allied Powers. The treaty came into effect a year later. The United Nations was founded in San Francisco after World War II to aid in preventing the kind of destruction that had occurred over the previous ten years.
In 2009
Additionally, the Bay Area served as the focal point of divisive demonstrations against economic and racial inequality. Following the fatal shooting of Oscar Grant, an African-American man, by Bay Area Rapid Transit police officers in 2009, there were several protests throughout the region and even rioting in Oakland. Two years later, his name became emblematic of the Occupy Oakland demonstrations, which aimed to combat social and economic injustice.
