History of pebble beach California

Pebble Beach was donated to Ramona Sanchez in 1838 as a portion of Rancho Butano. Later, San Francisco-based Clark & Coburn bought the rancho. Born in Vermont, Loren Coburn immigrated to California in 1851. He was employed in San Francisco as a businessman after working in mining.

In 1872, he relocated to the Pescadero region and started developing land. In the 1890s, Coburn built a sizable hotel on the hill above Pebble Beach in an attempt to attract tourists traveling by the proposed Ocean Shore Railroad from San Francisco.

The railroad’s development was halted by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and the hotel shuttered its doors for good.
